Roland Majeau Performs with Pro Coro Canada
Male Voices: The NEW Tradition
Sunday, November 11, 2007, 2 PM
Winspear Centre for Music
Trent Worthington, conductor
Edmonton, AB – From Celtic dirges to classic American Barbershop, the harmonies of the British invasion to the passion of a Kyrie, the male voice is capable of evoking great strength, joy and vulnerability at any age. Pro Coro Canada begins the Pro Coro LIGHT concert series with Male Voices: The NEW Tradition, November 11, 2:00 PM at the Winspear Centre.
Singer/songwriter Roland Majeau, Latin-Jazz group ¡Bomba!, and more than 50 young men from area high school and youth choirs join the men of Pro Coro Canada for an afternoon celebrating the male voice. The concert includes a tribute to Canada´s Forces in honour of Remembrance Day, a selection of traditional Irish songs, new arrangements of Beatles favourites, and a South American mass.
In his long and varied career, Roland Majeau has focused his writing on real life issues. Often likened to James Taylor, Roland´s unique blend of country, folk and pop pleases the ear while conveying universal emotions. Pro Coro Canada will perform Roland´s Soldier´s Cry, a song written to express honour and respect for Canada´s troops and veterans. Roland joins the choir for Heroes Behind the Badge, written for the NYPD during his time in NYC.
Latin-Jazz group ¡Bomba! eloquently fuses their Latin American and Canadian roots to create a profound blend of Latin song styles and impeccable jazz improvisations. ¡Bomba! joins Pro Coro Canada for Misa Criolla. Misa Criolla is the most famous work of Argentine composer Ariel Ramierez. Composed in 1964, it is one of the first masses to use the language, rhythms and instruments of Argentina. The work is rhythmically intense, featuring Argentine and Bolivian rhythms the vidala-baguala, Carnavalito-Yaravi, chacareer trunc, carnaval cochobambino and estilo pampeano.
Edmonton is "The City that Sings" and Pro Coro Canada is thrilled to be joined by young men form Kokopelli, Edmonton Youth Choir, Victoria School of Performing & Visual Arts, and Sturgeon Composite High School.
